THE ANCIENT SCROLLS
"So wait a minute…" I started confused and a bit annoyed, "Are you telling me I’m a fucking back up plan?!"
"If you choose to look at it in that way…then yes." replied Elder Merci completely emotionless.
"Oh…lovely." I said sarcastically, "I’m so thrilled."
"GF! That’s an honor! A privilege! How can you mock it?!" yelled Sparx as she zipped around my head wildly like she always does.
"Sorry but finding out that I’m the ‘high one’s’…" I started making quotes with high one, "…back up plan in case things get out of control, doesn’t exactly strike me as an extravagant title."
I rolled my colorless eyes and finished off, "I feel like I was just told that I’m the equivalent of a janitor for the world."
Elder Merci just stood there and did not try to offer any comfort of any kind. Instead there was a moment of utter awkward silence.
Like a parent dismissing a child’s rude comment or tantrum, Elder Merci went on to say, "You must return now Miss Fire."
Elder Merci raised her hand and a white lit portal appeared, similar to Sparx’s, " I have faith in you Gothic Fire. I‘m sure you will do the right thing."
I stood there for a moment looking at Elder Merci in all her radiance before slipping into the portal with Sparx on my shoulder.
When we came out we were in the city park, in broad daylight. People were everywhere going about their business. An old woman sitting on a bench feeding pigeons with stale bread, joggers listening to music, and a couple sitting under a tree giggling and kissing. The sight of them caused me to sigh and focus all my attention onto them, so much so that I didn’t notice the jogger running towards me and before I knew it, ran threw me.
I looked down at myself. I was in one piece. I looked back and the jogger kept running like nothing ever happened.
"They can’t see you, you know." said Sparx as we both watched the jogger round the corner.
"I know." I said as I turned towards Sparx who was sitting on my shoulder spike, "I’m still trying to get used to it."
I noticed as I spoke, some kind of commotion that caught my eye just behind Sparx. An old man laying on the ground with a young girl standing over him laughing.
"Something’s wrong." I said as I turned towards them.
As I got closer I saw that the old man had apparently been tripped by the little girl.
Out of human instinct I yelled, "HEY!" and to my surprise she looked in my direction briefly then ran.
I looked down at the old man who was oblivious to my presence, fumbling for his cane and cussing under his breath.
"I thought you said they can’t see me!" I yelled at Sparx as I chased after the little girl, who was running into a wooded area in hopes to elude me.
"Oops." said Sparx trying to keep up as I’m racing through people to catch the little girl.
"Oops! What do you mean oops!" I yelled.
"She’s a child." started Sparx, "Children and animals can actually see you. Innocence of the youth, you know."
"Dropped the ball on that one did we!" I barked back at Sparx as I reached the wooded area, but before Sparx could answer back I cut her off, "Ah! Shut up! I’ll deal with you later!"
I walked slowly, looking for a shadow that didn’t match the trees or bushes.
"Got ya!" I said as I reached into a bush next to me and grabbed the little girl’s arm.
"Let go of me! I didn’t do anything wrong!" yelled this little voice from behind the bush as I struggled to get her out.
"Easy kid! I’m not going to hurt you." I said to try and calm her, "What’s your name?"
"Liz! What’s it to you!" answered Liz as I managed to pull her from the bush.
"Fuck off lady!" Liz said still struggling with me then glared at me with a vile, pure evil look on her face.
My jaw dropped in horror and only one word managed to slip past my lips at the sight of her.
"No."
