NEW WORLD
The blackness slowly faded into a white light until my vision regained. I looked around and found myself in a field on the outskirts of my hometown. The very place I grew up. Just before my nightmare began.
"I don't know what the guardians are talking about, things look the same to me. The buildings, the sky, the ground..." buzzing started to come around my head and to which I swatted at, "The bugs!"
"HEY! Watch it!" said this tiny voice as this tiny little light flew in front of my face.
"Who...or what the hell are you?!" I said flinching back as this light grew and formed a shape in front of me. Before I knew it, a female figure was standing in front of me, somewhat nude and covered in fire.
"I am Sparx, the so called 'bug' you almost flatten." Sparx started, " Geez lady! Talk about first impressions. Did the guardians knock you on your head on your way to the living realm."
"You know, I don't take to kindly to little smart asses giving me crap, so I would watch it if I were you...whatever you are." I said glaring back at her.
"Consider me as your travel companion." replied Sparx.
"Companion? I don't need a companion. I have a job to do and I don't think it requires babysitting." I said as I started to dust myself off and stand up.
"Ah yes well tell that to the guardians, GF. They sent me and your stuck with me. Besides you have a lot to learn and that's where I come in." said Sparx as she shrunk back to a speck and started to follow me.
"Great" I grumbled under my breath, "The guardians must have a twisted sense of humor sticking me with you." The tiny light darted in front of my face which caused me to stop dead in my tracks and almost fall over.
"Look! There are things you need to know, GF! Before entering that town. You need to know the kind of things you will be going up against..." Sparx started as she flew about wildly in front of me. I sighed. "Fine, tell me, but tell me as we head towards the town. It's quite a ways to get there walking. And stop flying into my fucking face like that or swatting you will be the least of your worries!!"
"Hmmph! I can see that traveling with you is going to be ever so fun." exclaimed Sparx. Sparx yapped to me all the way to town. She told me of the different types of demons that plague the living. Inner demons, demon plagues and torture demons.
"Inner demons are the ones that embed themselves inside the living, shutting down the ability to choose right from wrong, to always do horrible acts, become violent and commit to crimes. They basically take control of the body."
"Demon Plagues patrol, looking for innocent people to infect. They are kind of like scouts for other demons. They are usually the ones that report back to higher demons and sometimes even directly to the dark guardian himself."
"Torture demons are just that. Pure evil torture to a living soul. They don't go into the living like the inners do but they torture the person. Their fears are usually what the demons work on. They find what you're most afraid of and torture you with images and such until the innocent commits a crime or commits suicide."
"And I'm betting that once the dark guardian gets wind of you There is bound to be more coming. He doesn't take too kindly in seeing his demons being vanquished."
"And how exactly am I suppose to get the inner demons, Sparx!" I asked with a disapproval look on my face. "I don't want to cause any more pain that that person may already be in."
"Your fire, GF. Your fire is your weapon. You send them back with your fire. As for the innocent being in pain, trust me they aren't in any. They never know there is one." explained Sparx.
"Ooooh...well shit, that just explains it all so clearly." I said sarcastically.
"You'll know what to do, GF."
"So I've been told." I said rolling my colorless eyes. By this time we were in town, on a warehouse roof, looking across the streets.
"And how exactly will I know who has a demon and who doesn't, smart ass." I asked starring into the streets, watching people scurrying around like ants.
"Oh that's easy." started Sparx, "The eyes, GF. The eyes are the..."
"Windows to the soul." I said cutting her off, "Somehow that doesn't surprise me." The town was becoming more and more less active as it grew darker and Sparx yapped on, telling me of how I can see things that the living can't see or lost the sense to see.
"A long time ago, the living could see all the creatures of this realm," started Sparx, "The living once believed in things like magic and gods. They drew pictures and told stories but as time moved on, the living stopped believing and soon the creatures became something of a myth or a legend but they still exist. They are very much alive and well. The living just can't see them now but they are here." Night time set in over the town. A blanket of darkness. Dark, quiet, almost peaceful and yet the intense feeling in the air of something evil loomed over every inch of the darkness. Suddenly a scream pierced the night air. It came from the alley below and I grinned mischievously.
"Hmmmmmmmm....Playtime."
